This was a Special Issue on Modernist Life Narratives: Biography, Autobiography, Bildungsroman, and featured essays on each of the writers shown here.
From left to right:
Top row: Lili Elbe, Assia Djebar, V.S. Naipaul, Virginia Woolf.
Middle: Truman Capote.
Bottom: Agnes Smedley, Oscar Wilde, Gertrude Stein.
The simple black and white version above worked best for the journal. I had also played with colors, looking for a more contemporary and unexpected look and feel.
