These hats are imported from Madagascar to Spain by Artesanos Trotamundos, a small company, based in Barcelona. Madagascar is one of the poorest countries in the world, and by commissioning local artisans and paying them a competitive wage, the company has created much needed decent jobs there. In addition, part of the proceeds from the hats go to "Maman Kangourou", an ONG that cares for premature babies and their mothers. Due to the extreme poverty, sadly, 14% of all newborns are born prematurely in Madagascar.
